Public Lecture and Presidential Address by Dr Jean Venables

Public Lecture and Presidential Address: The Climate Change Challenge and the Water Cycle

When: Wednesday, 10th December 2008, 18:30 – 20:00
Where: Auckland War Memorial Museum Auditorium

Dr Jean Venables, OBE, FREng., President of the UK Institution of Civil Engineers and its first woman President, will set down the fundamentals of the climate change challenge and how they affect the water cycle. She will address the implications of climate change on the water cycle under six main headings:

water supply
environmental impacts
drainage and wastewater treatment
flood risk management
predicted changes, for example seasonal changes and increased storminess, and
carbon, and the need for carbon accounting alongside financial accounting, and the potential changes this would bring to decision-making on water infrastructure.
Dr Venables will review the Thames Estuary 2100 Project (UK) and its planning provisions for flood risk management in the Thames Estuary through to the Year 2100, taking predicted climate change effects into account.
